Three museums in Munich

Three museums in Munich

Today we talk about three museums in Munich that, in my opinion, must be visited during a stay in town. Let’s start with the Deutsches Museum, which occupies the entire “Museumsinsel” (“museum island”). This museum is the most extensive science and technology museum in the world and is the museum that I liked most among those we saw in our week in Munich.
Museo della scienza e della tecnica The entrance ticket costs 11€, and I suggest you leave the biggest bags in the wardrobe on the ground floor (It’s not far from the ticket office. There are lockers of various sizes, and personally I found it very comfortable). The museum is divided into five floors connected by stairs and elevators, ranging from many topics treated in well-organised rooms, although I would have something (not so good) to say about the lighting. The topics are more or less always the same (energy, physics, pure chemistry, pharmacy,
Museo della scienza e della tecnica computer science, telecommunications, weights and measures, musical instruments, technical toys and others), but I admit I have appreciated more than other museums on the same topic, London in the first place. I loved the possibility to try, touch and test (there are a lot more possibilities than I had ever found during my travels and also much more than I imagined). On the fifth floor there are the astronomical observatory and the Zeiss planetarium: check the schedules of any shows to be sure not to wait unnecessarily by getting there too early.
una visita al museo nazionale The second museum we are talking about today, and I suggest you visit the Bavarian National Museum in Prinzregentenstraße. Open from Tuesday to Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00, the full ticket costs 7€, and there is also a wardrobe with lockers (remember that you need 1€ or 2€ coins to take advantage of this service of lockers-wardrobes in museums). We arrived at the museum just before 3 pm, finding it practically deserted, except for 3 or 4 people seen during the visit.
una visita al museo nazionale The core of the museum itself is the Wittelsbach collection, which was donated to the city by Maximilian II in 1855, and today the exhibition is divided into three floors. The basement houses the collection of cribs (open from November to January) and the folk art collection; the ground floor is home to paintings, sculptures and artefacts dating back to the eighteenth century; finally, on the first floor, there are musical instruments, porcelain and Biedermeier style art. One thing I found very kitsch? The armour with some silver balloons tied!
Il museo egizio di Monaco But let’s go further and conclude the post with the Egyptian Museum (Staatliches Museum Ägyptischer Kunst). The entrance ticket costs 7€, and I admit I was pleasantly surprised by the setting and lighting of the various exhibition rooms. The museum initially dates back to the collection of Duke Albert of Bavaria. Together with the Egyptian collection of Berlin and Hildesheim, the one exhibited in this museum is the most significant collection in Germany. In the various rooms are displayed objects of all Egyptian periods up to the Christian Coptic culture along with some archaeological finds of nearby civilisations (Nubia, Assyria,
Il museo egizio di Monaco Babilonia). The tour route follows a precise and pre-established direction, marked by a long “brass arrow” that you can see along the floor of the various rooms (you can also see it in the picture): you can’t go wrong; I assure you because these marks are really high-visible. We did not take long to complete the tour, maybe a couple of hours, and I highly recommend you come to visit it even if you are not the number one fan of ancient Egypt (and I am not a big fan at first of ancient Egypt). What do you think of these three museums of which I spoke to you today? Are these museums that you would visit?
