4 ways to discover Athens

4 ways to discover Athens

I continue the story of my journey to discover the Greek capital and, with this final post, I will talk about 4 ways to discover Athens. I’ll start from the National Gardens, the large park located behind the parliament in Syntagma Square
I giardini nazionaliand which continues (almost) up to the Panathenaic Stadium.
I was very impressed by how this great park is well maintained, despite its great extension. made visitor. During the summer, take a walk here is the perfect way to get some fresh air in the shade of the trees. Near the pond (the one in the picture) there is a large cage with different animals: goats, rabbits and peacocks whom attracted the attention of children who remain enchanted in front of the cage trying to feed the animals (and goats seem very interested in the idea of the food). The park was designed by Amalia of Oldenburg, the Queen consort of Ottone the first king of modern Greece. You can stroll around its lanes from sunrise to sunset and the main entrance is located on Vassilissis Amalias (other entrances are on Vasilissis Sofias and Irodou Atticou).
Piazza Syntagma As I said a few lines ago, the National Gardens are located behind the parliament and now we go right at Syntagma Square, This is the most famous square of the city: this square is overlooked by the greek parliament, there is the monument to the unknown soldier and also the famous Greek guards (the ones with pom-poms on the shoes that we all know). Every day, every hour, there is the change of the guard ceremony: I recommend, if you arrive too early, to stay there to assist at the ceremony because it is definitely very special and I think it’s an aspect of Athens that you should discover. I suggest, then, to go for a walk through the streets of Plaka which is, basically, the city center.
una passeggiata a Plaka Here there are, of course, shops and restaurants “for tourists” (and perhaps a bit more expensive  compared to the others around the city), but my suggestion to go there is not due to these two reasons: as it is the city center, it shows the oldest structure of Athens, its typical and historical street. Plaka it is largely a pedestrian area and for that it’s easier walking through the streets. I recommend you to go there in the evening to avoid the great heat of the day. To finish the tour I bring you to discover Monastiraki square, which takes its name from the Church of Pantanassa which is right on the square. Monastiraki It is always part of the historic center of Athens and gave name to the entire Monastiraki area (which means literally “monastery”). In the area there is a huge flea market (so wide that the entire neighborhood is defined as a flea market). Here it’s possible to observe the life of the “real Athens”, especially the young people who gather here from late afternoon. We stayed in a hotel near the square and i can tell you that this place has a very intense life: you will find always someone standing and chatting there!
