4 places in Athens

4 places in Athens

Finally I start to tell you in detail my 4 day trip to discover the Greek capital!

I would tell you about 4 places to visit in Athens. I will talk about 4 places with nothing in common,but with 4 great stories. I start with the National Archaeological Museum, a “must visit” during a stay in Athens.
Address: 28is Oktovriou 44;
Museo archeologico: l'esposizioneOpening Hours: the official website says every day from 8:00 to 20:00. On the internet I founded, however, a lot of different opening ours (also that the museum is closed on Mondays);
Ticket:  the full price is 10€ (free for students with ID and reduced for different categories); every Sunday from November 1st  to March 31st, the entrance should be free. For more information I remind you, however, that it is always best to check the official website of the museum. We’re talking about one of the most important museums of Athens and one of the 10 most important in the world. A recommendation for you: do not rush to conclude the visit, do not rush to be able to see even the smallest jar! Keep calm, use all the time you need.
Museo archeologico: la Maschera di AgamennoneWe have visited it in about two hours, turning without haste for its salt and, I admit, I was pleasantly surprised by how they have organized some rooms. The collections are divided into three sections and, fortunately, arranged in chronological order. If you arrive at the museum in search of the Funeral Mask of Agamemnon, this is located in Hall 4, among the “artifacts from Mycenae“. My attention wasn’t caught only by the mask, but also from the Bronze sculpture known as “The Jockey of Artemissio” (Hall 21, you will recognize it for sure). From the museum I bring you to Agia Marina (“St. Marina” church), one of the Orthodox churches of Athens.
Agia Marina: esternoIt isn’t open no stop, as it we had thought, but it’s open from 8 to 12 in the morning and from 17 to 20 in the afternoon. I was struck by the shape and size of this church, as it happened with almost all of those I visited during this trip to Athens; Agia Marina: interniinside I was impressed by how the church seemed to me smaller than the first impression that I had had … Obviously I’m well aware that in reality it was just me probably due to the organization of the interior spaces. A second thing that struck me, not only here but in all the churches we visited, are the frescoes on the walls, ceiling and dome: the traits very different from those which “we are used to seeing,” were able to hold me with the nose upward for most of the visit.
La cattedrale: interni in ristrutturazioneIn the center of Athens, in metropolitan square, we find the Athens Cathedral (the full name is Metropolitan Cathedral of Athens). Me and my friend, unfortunately, we went to visit it during the renovation of the interior, but luckily we still managed to see something. Built over twenty years, the cathedral was solemnly consecrated in 1862 and, in addition to being the main church of the city, is the seat of the archbishop of Athens and of the entire Greece. It is a few minutes walk from Syntagma Square and just at the entrance of Plaka area, so it is really very simple to include a visit to the cathedral during a stay in Athens.
The last stop of this tour is at the Panathinaiko Stadium, also known as Kallimarmaron.
Stadio Panathinaiko: vista dagli spaltiWe are talking about an historic place which is, by the news that I found when I prepared the trip, the only major stadium in the world built entirely saucepan marble (marble of Mount Pentelic). It was built in 560 BC by Pisistratus and the first major event to be held in this facility were the Panathenaic Games, designed by Pisistratus himself, in honor of the goddess Athena on the model of the Olympic Games that were held in Olympia.
Stadio Panathinaiko: esposizioneIn addition to that, in 1896 the Panathinaiko Stadium was the site of the first edition of the modern Olympic games. During the visit we recommend going to the Olympic Museum, always inside the stadium, where you can find a display of logos, posters and Olympic flames of past editions of the Olympic Games: certainly it’s an interesting exhibition that allows visitors to trace the history of the Olympic Games through this side of the story.
The stadium is located in Leof. Vasileos Konstantinos, just one kilometer dal’Acropoli and very close to the national gardens
