Useful informations about Munich

Useful informations about Munich

I came back in Rome from Munich just few days ago and today and I take at the opportunity of my attendance on Radio Godot (on monday 25th of July) to write this post with all the useful informations about Munich I collected during my holiday in town (with some personal considerations at the end)
Moving from the airport: the S1 and S8 lines lead directly into the city center. The first (S8) it takes about 35 minutes, while the second (S1) about 50. The ticket costs EUR 10.80 (one way)
Vista su MonacoTickets for public transport: the vending machines to buy the tickets are available at each station. In larger stations (Ostbahnhof, Hauptbahnhof and Marienplatz) there are also information points with staff also vending tickets. We have purchased the IsarCard: we chose the one valid for 7 days from Ring 1 to Ring 4 and we paid 21.50 Euro each card(validity dates are printed directly on the ticket). Unfortunately from vending machines it isn’t easy to understand how to buy them and therefore I recommend you to buy your card in a station where you will find people of staff.
– The public transport network is very extensive and you have multiple choices: The S-Bahn is the network of suburban trains (in the city still goes under the ground, like a subway); The U-Bahn is the city’s metro network; the network of trams and buses is very dense, and above all very timely! The Bus 100 is the “museum bus”.
Announcements on public transport: with regard to the town center and S-Bahn and U-Bahn there are announcements in both German and English. On buses and trams, on the other hand, I heard them only in German (but I used them recently and may also depend on the line). Same thing happened to me along the lines U4 and U6 and U8 along the outside of the city.
Shops’ weekly closing day: Sunday afternoon, before returning to the apartment, we thought to go shopping to buy gifts to take home but we found everything closed (including commercial galleries). So, if you need to buy something avoid sunday.
Tips for eating: there are just two places I want to recommend you:
1) Hans im Glück is a chain of restaurant which offers sandwiches and salads. The sandwich I tried was good and the chain is economic. We saw several restaurants around Munich.
2) Safran: Indian restaurant in Steinstraße 79, near the apartment where I stayed with my friend (not in the city center, but well served by public transports). The food is quite good, servings are generous and prices are fairly affordable.
For breweries (“must try” in Munich) I followed few tips I received about the best breweries in the city. The atmosphere of  Weisses Brauhaus, brewery specializes in wheat beer, impressed me in a very positive way. What I liked? The atmosphere on the communal tables, with people socializing with each other, but also the speed of the staff: less than 5 minutes after the order our dinner was in front of us.
una delle porte del centro Now it’s time for some personal considerations to conclude this post:
The main attractions are relatively close one to each other within easy walking distance from each other and these can be easily reached by foot. I loved that because I love to walk on the street to know better the city.
As I already told you the public transport network is very dense, there are maps and precise timetables and there are frequent runs.
I found a city built on a human scale: you can ride a bike without any kind of problems, thanks to the well-marked bicycle lanes; There are many green areas where you can stop; it is not difficult to get around by public transport.
