Stromboli: a magic island

Stromboli: a magic island

I must admit that this post was not easy to write. The useful information I have already written to you during the holiday, so today I would like to tell you about the island, my experience, as I have lived it. Why was it difficult to write this post? Because I did not want it to be just purely descriptive, like “do this, this and this other” and that’s it, but I would like to transmit (and perhaps above all) my feelings.
However, let’s start with the story (hoping not to get bored too much). Stromboli is a small island and very distinct. Stromboli, like all the Aeolian Islands, has a volcanic origin. Its origin is reminded of its volcano always active: at every time during the day, there is a plume of smoke that comes out of the crater, and there is always a perennial mumbling that, at certain moments, also puts a little anxiety.
Attese The port is located in the area of Scari and is a single solitary pier, however, suitable for “all types of passenger ships” (cruise ships excluded, of course). We arrived at 6:30 in the morning, when the island is still waking up; around we see so many tourists sleepy, just arrived or waiting to go home and these early hours of the morning are probably the best to start understanding the island. Fortunately for us, the only bar near the port is managed by the owner of the hotel where we stayed and, therefore, we had breakfast even if the bar was not yet officially open to the public.
The “beach” stretches near the pier, and the beautiful thing is that despite this, despite the tide of boats from the most different dimensions that run here, the water is always crystal clear and transparent and can not be seen, or at least not in an open way, signs of pollution. Remember that in any case, the water from the sea of Stromboli is quite cold. If you are a tanning enthusiast, remember that on the Ficogrande side there is dawn and depending on how far you leave the pier you will have the sun for longer.
Chiesa in piazza The exploration of parts that are accessible on foot (the village of Ginostra can only be reached by sea) does not take long, it must be said, but the things to discover, the little glimpses in which “stumble” and fall in love are always however many. Set out on its narrow streets, from the port to the “central” square, stretch up to Piscità and be enchanted by the colours of the spectacular sunsets that you can enjoy from that area of the island (from Ficogrande you can see the sunrise). One of the first things I noticed is that the houses are (almost all) of the same colours as those of Greek islands such as Santorini and Mykonos, and then Stromboli, from this point of view (and only this! ) reminded me a lot (in a positive way).
La sciara di fuoco There are paths, for trekking enthusiasts, to get to the crater of the volcano (several companies organise excursions, and some provide the night spent outside). To follow the paths up to the top, you must have all the right equipment (some shops rent all the stuff). We have chosen to arrive, alone, only up to the observatory because of lack of material (we had not thought of doing the hike, we wanted a relaxing holiday). The observatory is an observation point that is about 190 meters of altitude, not far from the restaurant “the observatory” and reached along a path along which you have to be careful where you put your feet because you risk hurting yourself! Slippers and sandals are not recommended! You can see, even if only sideways, the Sciara di Fuoco, the “slide” that the lava has created to descend along the side of the volcano up to the sea. I advise you a lot to do this walk, despite the heat and fatigue, because you will be repaid, I am sure that you wiòll like a lot the final view from there.
Edera strombolana I advise you to dedicate the first hours on the island to discover the views and become familiar with Stromboli itself: you will then have all the calm you can to go and explore the island and its corners. The hidden edges are so many even though the island is tiny, do not rush to discover them all together !! The “monuments” are just two small churches, open in the morning, and you can easily reach them on foot. Take the slow pace of the island, never go running, and also get familiar with the animals that are a bit ‘the masters” of Stromboli. Between curious and sweet dogs and the cats that you find to doze around Stromboli, I assure you that the animal population is well fed (or at least more nourished than I imagined). Live on the beach, knowing its beautiful sea and its tranquillity. As you can see, there are not many things to look beyond nature and the sea and excursions by land and sea but do not think to get here and get bored.
