Today I bring you to discover the Residence of Monaco of Bavaria, for centuries the seat of the government and place of residence of the dukes, then of the electors and finally of the kings of Bavaria. It’s located in the city centre, behind Marienplatz, and the structure is big enough to contain ten courtyards!
The structure is divided into three main buildings: the Königsbau (towards the Max-Joseph-Platz), the Maximilianische Residenz (the “old residence”, overlooking Residenzstraße and which includes a large part of the interior wing) and the Festsaalbau (located towards the ‘Hofgarten).
–How to get there: Residenzstraße 1
S-Bahn (suburban railway) “Marienplatz”;
U-Bahn (underground) “Marienplatz” or “Odeonsplatz”;
bus “Odeonsplatz”;
Tram “Nationaltheater”;
– Entrance ticket:
Residence € 7 (€ 6 reduced)
Treasure € 7 (€ 6 reduced)
Residence + treasure € 11 (€ 9 reduced)
Cuvilliés Theater € 3.50 (€ 2.50 reduced ticket). Pay attention and check the opening hours.
Biglietto combinato Residenza+Tesoro+Cuvilliés Theater 13€ (10.50€ il ridotto);
– Audio guide: included in the admission ticket. When you take it, you have to specify if you want to visit the residence or the treasure first because it will be programmed (and then you will have to go through it to have it reprogrammed). Personally, I found it too long in the explanations, in fact, at a certain point, I decided to stop using it. The section dedicated to the treasure is fascinating to visit, although I sincerely visited it very quickly without dwelling too much on the individual items on display in the various rooms.
The theatre is obviously very crowded with tourists. I recommend you visit it because it certainly deserves: small, with gold trim and a royal box that (like almost all the royal boxes) leaves open-mouthed. I recommend you arm yourself with a lot of patience for the photos: the space is relatively little, and everyone arrives with the intention of taking some souvenir photos! I recommend you go calmly to enjoy the show that the theatre offers. I advise you not to skip the visit of the residence and to go there on a sunny day, to also enjoy its gardens that surely deserve to be visited (there are also several benches where you can sit down to enjoy even more the tranquillity of the park).
