Tivoli: a visit to Villa D’Este

Tivoli: a visit to Villa D’Este

We all know, at least in name, the splendid Villa d’Este in Tivoli, a masterpiece of the Italian Renaissance and UNESCO World Heritage Site. Commissioned by Cardinal Ippolito II d’Este, the history of its construction is linked to the events of the papacy and cardinal d’Este.
il cortile d'ingresso He was appointed as governor for life of Tivoli and its territory by Pope Julius III as thanks for the help for his election as pontiff (so we are talking about half of the 16th century). The villa “was born” from the convent attached to the church of Santa Maria Maggiore: the duke should have lived in this partially converted convent. I will not tell you the story right down to the smallest details, there are plenty of books that can tell you better than me, and even Wikipedia tells you the story of the villa better than I could do myself!
Vista su terrazza The last private owner of the villa was Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Hapsburg-Este, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who wanted to sell the villa to the Italian state, but his assassination ended the negotiation. After the First World War, it became the property of the Italian State: essential restorations were made which allowed it to be opened to the public. It was restored again after the second world war because of the damage due to the bombs that had hit the villa complex. The garden of the villa, the work of Pirro Ligorio, which in my opinion can only be defined as “splendid”, today extends “behind” the villa from the current main entrance.
Fontana The fountains were fed only by exploiting the natural pressure and the principle of communicating vessels. Ligorio built a system of pipes and an underground tunnel of about six hundred meters that took water from the Aniene and brought it to a tank that “supplied” the fountains of the garden (capacity: 300 litres per second). Small historical note: Hungarian composer and pianist Liszt lived and worked for several years at Villa D’Este (a plaque on one of the walls of the small inner courtyard that you must cross to go
Fontana e giochi d'acqua from the ticket office to apartments also reports the news). The admission ticket costs 8 euros. The villa is closed on Mondays, and from Tuesday to Sunday the opening hours are from 08:30 to 18:30. Take into account, as the duration of the visit for at least two hours, while official and unofficial sources speak of 1h30: but I advise you to consider it as a minimum time to be able to see the villa and the park. Keep in mind, for the photographic aspect, you will have to be very patient because the tourists visiting the villa are always many (indeed, many) and everyone wants to make the best and most beautiful photo at most of the fountains: there are room and time for everyone, do not be impatient! Personally, one of the things that annoy me the most while I’m taking a picture, is having a snorting person because he can’t do the same picture that I’m trying to do it too.

I recommend a visit to the villa to appreciate even more the magic, its history and the history of the city itself.
