Unusual Naples: 5 places to discover

Unusual Naples: 5 places to discover

Naples is a particular city, with a thousand places to discover. The last trip I took to the city led me to explore some unusual places, but not too much, and more or less known. Start from the Hotel Correra 241, in via F.S. Correra 241 and first “Art Hotel” of the city:
Hotel Correra 241: Acquedotto romano The hotel is “hidden” in a small side street of Via Toledo and inside it hides and preserves the remains of an ancient Greek-Roman aqueduct! The visible part is very short, do not expect long walks in the city dungeons, just visit the reception (if you go after 11 I think they will be happy because it will be past breakfast time and there will be less chaos). What struck me? Surely! The hotel was built perfectly around the remains themselves, and making some walls belonging to the ancient aqueduct became walls of the modern hotel!
Palazzo Spagnuolo Palazzo dello Spagnuolo is a building that in Italy has come to the fore thanks to a tv series. Located at 10 Via dei Vergini, in the Sanità district, the palace was built in 1738 by the will of the Marquis Nicola Moscati. Why is it such an unusual building? For a very particular staircase located in the inner courtyard: this staircase connects the various landings and the apartment with its atypical structure, called “falcon wings”. Very particular structure, which can only be impressive for those who pass through here.
Bassorilievo dell'uomo villoso In Via Mezzocannone, in front of the historic building of the Federico II University, there is the bas-relief of the “hairy man”. It was found in the 16th century during the excavations for the foundations of the Sedile di Porto, Naples district adjacent to the sea, and about it, there are a lot of stories and legends. The inscription just below identifies it as Orione who, according to the legend, took refuge at sea to escape Apollo and was shot to death by Diana, who then repented and turned him into a constellation.
However, in the Neapolitan tradition, this extremely hairy man with a dagger in his hand is known as Colapesce (Cola, from Nicola, and Pesce): boy cursed by his mother for his continuous dives that end up becoming a fish and scaling. Cola sought refuge in the sea, using the body of large fish from which it was swallowed, to go out of them when he needed, cutting their belly. This legend originates from the late pagan cult of the sons of Neptune, that is, divers with magical powers, able to hold their breath in apnea to be able to steal their treasures and secrets. They acquired their magical powers by mating with mysterious marine beings (probably the monk seals) and with
Borgo marinaro the help of the Mermaid Partenope. Right under Castel dell’Ovo, facing the seafront of Mergellina, lies the area called Borgo Marinaro. It is located on the Isolotto di Megaride, in the San Ferdinando district, and it’s connected to the mainland by an artificial isthmus. The little “Borgo” owes its name to the fact that the sailors came to live here to be close to the boats (and therefore to the sea, their place of work).
Chiesa di Santa Chiara I want to close this post with the Basilica of Santa Chiara, a monumental building of worship among the most important and magnificent monastic complexes of the city. This basilica is the most massive Gothic basilica in Naples, famous (and above all) for its beautiful majolica cloister and inside it houses the tombs of the Bourbons. The chapel of the Bourbons is in Baroque style, today evidence of what has survived the bombing of the allies (1943) and there are buried several members of the dynasty of the Bourbons of Naples with their family, from Ferdinand to Francis II.
