Ferrara: useful information

Ferrara: useful information

“Why are you going to Ferrara?!”

probably was the question my friends asked me the most, before my weekend in town. I want to start my travel report with a post about the useful information for a stay in Ferrara.

How to get there

Going by car from Rome has been very long (5 hours with three stops and just a little of traffic). The highway costs 30,30 euro (if you depart from Rome as I did). The nearest airport is the “Guglielmo Marconi” in Bologna; there is also the train station where should stop also the High speed trains.

Practice information

Car park: if you arrive by car and you will stay in a hotel located in the city centre, I suggest you ask if the hotel has a car park; I noticed that all the parking spaces in the Ferrara centre were almost all taken (for all day long). It could be an alternative use one of the secure car parks you can find long all the ancient city wall, but I can’t help you with the price (I left the car at the hotel and the parking lot could be a little bit expensive)
Visit the city: the city centre is tiny, almost entirely “car free” and very easy to visit. If you are staying in a hotel quite near the centre, you will not need your car! A valid alternative could be a bicycle: you may rent one and use it to visit the town (Ferrara is quite flat, and you shouldn’t have too many problems). I suggest you think about the rent of a bicycle, which seems to be the most used mode of transportation in Ferrara
Bicycle: It could be safe to pay always attention to them if you aren’t used to living in a city with a lot of bicycles; the cycle lanes are always visible.

Where to eat

Hostaria Savonarola: Me and my friends, we paid 20 euro each, and we founded good food and a perfect service! This place is always full of people, and there is almost every evening the queue (inside and outside): I suggest you book the night before.
It is located in Piazza Savonarola 18, beside the Ferrara Castle and just in front of the Cathedral.

Typical Cusine

The Emilian Cuisine is one of my favourites, and the typical cuisine of Ferrara reflects perfectly the regional traditions. I tried few Ferrara typical dishes:
Salama da sugo: this is also called “salamina da sugo”, it is an IGP product, and it’s always served with some mashed potatoes, to soften the Salama strong flavour. This plate could be not so easy to digest, so my suggestion is to pay attention if you have some digestive difficulties.
Pasticcio di maccheroni: This is a crust of shortcrust pastry with maccheroni with ragù, béchamel and mushrooms all baked in the oven. It is also called “pasticcio Ferrarese”.
Cappellacci di zucca: this is my favorite one, IGP product since 2016. The best dressing seems to be sagebrush and butter, and I add that ragù cover a lot the pumpkin flavour. In my opinion, this dish is a “must try” during a stay in town.
Pampepato o Pampapato IGP: I conclude this part of the post with a dessert, with another IGP product of Ferrara. Typically cooked during Christmas period, starting from the end of November, the pampepato has a very particular flavour (due to the spices employed). It’s possible to read something about its history on the website Ferrara Terra e Acqua, official website for all the touristic aspects of Ferrara district
