Monday, October 28, I was in Pomezia for a press conference and, at the end of the conference, the organizers took us to visit the small “Lavinium” civic museum in Pratica di Mare. It is a small and well organized museum, which I found quite interesting! (however, I will talk about my personal judgments at the end of this post).
Founded in 2005, this small museum brings to light the ancient history of this area of Lazio since the founding of Lavinium by Enea. In the various rooms there are relics dating between the X century BC and Roman times, including the big statue of Minerva (at the entrance) and large terracotta votive statues, mainly female, coming from the sanctuary of the goddess.
The museum is divided into five thematic rooms: Tritonia Virgo, Mundus Muliebris, Hic Domus Aeneae, Civitas Religious, Aeneas Indiges. Our guide was the director of the museum itself and I found very interesting her explanations.
What I liked the most? Surely the preparation of each room, because it is easy to notice the amount of time and attention that the museum management has devoted to both these aspects; secondly the fact that it is within reach of blind and visually impaired, with tactile experiences (you can touch small statues copies) and Braille plates; Finally, I loved the high interactivity and the high use of video reconstructions: I think it is a great way to engage visitors of the museum.
– Where it is: in Via Pratica di Mare. If you arrive from Pomezia, you will find it on your right (going towards the sea), just before the “Sezione Aerea Guardia Di Finanza”. I wasn’t driving, so I can’t really tell you how difficult it is to get there, but it doesn’t seems very difficult.
– Ticket fares: 5€ (3€ reduced)
– Opening hours: Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 14:00; Saturday and Sunday from 9:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 18:30
Pomezia has a lot of things to offer to those who come to visit the city and the administration is moving well, in my opinion, with regard to the town organization. The municipality decided, before starting any project which might be very risky (and perhaps even bankruptcy), to assess whether and what problems exist in the area: for this reason the city council has hired the company SL&A, which deals with hospitality and tourism, environment, businesses and local economies.
